In Maricopa County, Arizona defendants’ U.S. Constitutional rights and privileges are often ignored and denied entirely. Human rights, dignity, and simple respect have diminished greatly. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is currently facing a public outcry to recall votes from his most recent elected win. Yet with every scandal surrounding Sheriff Joe the truth remains unseen. Is this system of justice really the least costly form of confinement, or is the true cost merely being hidden from public inspection? What is the truth? This is an attempt to uncover the truth, as told form the perspective of an inmate.

During the summer of 2012, author Kimberly Shedrick was incarcerated in one of America’s toughest jails – Maricopa County Estrella Tents. Uncovered in this book are publicly unknown details about inmate population, the never-ending revolving horseshoe, and housing conditions that will amaze critics. Some of the most horrifying stories of mistreatment of women involve miscarriages and incidents of death and suicide.

As new American Princesses, eleven women courageously tell their stories of struggle and survival, while sharing a unique experience in Tent City. In the end, these women gain a sense of self-awareness that would aid tremendously in their growth and future success.

In the darkness the truth shall always yield to the light of day. Inmates say, “I wasn’t arrested…I was rescued….”
