A Call to Action

June 10, 2013 by Anna M. Clausen in Last Word
It certainly doesn’t feel like a year has gone by already since we last had a letter drive to the United States Sentencing Commission concerning their proposed agenda for the coming year. On May 30 they published their priorities for 2014 and requested all public commentary be submitted by July 15, 2013. Last year we had tremendous success promoting the “stop stacking 924(c)’s Amendment” and were able to encourage the USSC to make that one of their top priorities. This year it remains at the top of their current list for next year, but we need to ensure that it remains there until the issue is at last addressed.

This year we’ve witnessed unprecedented support for mandatory minimum sentencing reform. The Justice Safety Valve Reform of 2013 has received bipartisan support in BOTH the House as well as the Senate. During a time when politicians seem content to remain gridlocked on issues of national importance it’s shocking to see this sort of collegiality on an issue that has been historically polarizing. Obviously, financial concerns have had a tremendous impact on sentencing reform due to the escalating costs of incarceration. This presents us with a great opportunity to secure sentencing reform that will have an impact on the lives of many, both inside as well as out in the community, who have already suffered far in excess of what is required to satisfy the interests of justice. Imagine how many families could benefit from this type of reform. We all need to do our part to make sure these amendments get passed.

Please take time to send your letter to the United States Sentencing Commission and express your support for “Amendment #1.” Let them know you support an amendment to “Stop Stacking 924(c)’s (firearm sentences) and to pass the “Safety Valve” that will allow judges to sentence individuals BELOW the statutory mandatory minimum. Make it a point to become an integral part of the solution and ensure that your voice is heard when it matter the most. Together, we can make a difference and reunite countless families all across the country. Make sure YOUR voice gets heard. Go to www.famm.org. In the body of the text it lists “Features”. Click on “Make Your Voice Heard” to read the amendments, and then mail your letter in support of Amendment #1 and against Amendment #3.
